GoodLife Fitness Ottawa St. Laurent makes the cut as a top contender. As part of Canada’s largest health club chain with hundreds of facilities nationwide, this location is a staple for fitness enthusiasts in the area.

Description
Let us start with a basic question. What is the average cost of a gym membership? In Canada, a gym membership typically costs between $30 to $170 per month, depending on the location and facilities. However, some memberships cost as low as $15. Keeping a balance between affordability and value is delicate, but a few facilities manage it well.
Planet Fitness is one such example. It is a global chain with over 2,700 locations worldwide (as of late 2024). CNN calls it a “no-frills, low-cost gym that gets people off the couch and gives fitness a try.”
The monthly costs for using Planet Fitness in Ottawa (Merivale) start at $15.00 plus tax for the Classic membership. Considering the value for money, Planet Fitness stands out.
Amenities
- Unlimited Access to Home Club
- PF App Workouts
- Free WiFi
- Clean space and tons of cardio/strength machines
- Black Card Exclusive: Massage chairs, HydroMassage, Tanning, Total Body Enhancement
- Black Card Exclusive: 50% off select drinks
Membership Programs
There are two membership programs: the PF Black Card (starting at 29.99/month) and the Classic Membership (starting at 15.00/month).
Classic Membership: Includes unlimited access to your home club, free fitness training, and free WiFi.
PF Black Card: Includes all Classic benefits plus unlimited guest privileges (bring a guest anytime), access to any Planet Fitness location worldwide, and use of the “Black Card Spa” amenities (tanning, massage chairs, HydroMassage, and Total Body Enhancement).
Note: Both memberships typically require an annual fee (usually $49) and a small startup fee.
Pros
- The gym is quite clean and spacious.
- The machines are logically organized and plentiful.
- The gym is extremely affordable compared to competitors.
- “Judgement Free Zone” atmosphere is welcoming for beginners.
Cons
- It is ideal for beginners. Intermediate or advanced lifters (3–6+ months experience) may find the equipment limiting.
- There is a large selection of cardio machines, but the gym lacks standard free-weight barbells and power racks. It utilizes Smith machines for heavy compounds.
- Dumbbells are typically capped at 50 lbs (some locations go to 75 lbs, but 50 lbs is standard).
- It is not designed for powerlifters or those strictly focused on heavy strength training.

Description
If you are new to the journey of fitness, CrossFit is a strength and conditioning workout consisting of functional movements like squatting, pushing, and pulling performed at a high intensity. Unlike traditional workouts, it often prescribes specific repetitions within a set time domain. It is known for being an intense regimen that tones the body and builds community.
Among Ottawa’s options, CrossFit 1855 stands out. We appreciate its spacious, well-fitted facility that welcomes visitors from other boxes. The gym offers a variety of classes, including their signature CrossFit programming, Athletic Conditioning, and their newly added HYROX training (official affiliate since November 2024). Both professional and recreational athletes find the gym valuable.
The environment is notably friendly and welcoming. Owners and coaches Steve Briscoe and Andy Stewart are known for creating a supportive atmosphere with a great sense of humor, making workouts fun yet challenging. The gym also offers specific programs for teens (“Teen Titans”) and kids, ensuring there is something for everyone.

- 1855 Barbell Club: A dedicated stream for those looking to improve Olympic lifts (Snatch, Clean & Jerk) or train for competitive seasons.
- Therapy Services: On-site access to athletic therapy and chiropractic care through 360 Recovery Zone is a major convenience for recovery.
Cons
- Limited Amenities: As a functional fitness box, it does not offer “luxury” health club amenities like swimming pools, saunas, or full-time childcare.
- Open Gym Rules: While open gym is available, it requires members to be approved for competency and safety, and class times always take priority over open gym space.

Description
First things first, let us discuss what a boutique-style gym is. It typically focuses on group exercise and specializes in one or two fitness areas. While boutique gyms are often expensive, they are desired for their close-knit community, positive environment, specialized equipment, and motivating instructors.
Ottawa has several gym options, but Movati Athletic stands out as a “club-within-a-club” concept. While the brand has grown to 18 locations across Ontario and Alberta, the location reviewed for this list is in Kanata.
The club features multiple dedicated boutique studios for your favourite type of exercise program, such as a Hot Yoga Studio, a Cycle Studio, a Pilates Studio, and a dedicated Women’s Only Studio. Uniquely, the Kanata location also features a Sky Studio with retractable windows for fresh-air workouts. When we visited the facility, we found it neat and clean with top-notch equipment.
There are two indoor swimming pools (one co-ed and one in the Women’s Only area) and spa-like amenities including saunas and steam rooms. If you are looking to achieve your health goals with like-minded people in a premium facility, Movati is a strong choice. You can sign up for a wide variety of group fitness classes or exercise on your own.
Note on Childcare: Please be aware that Movati Athletic permanently discontinued its “Playroom” childcare services in late 2023.
When surveying existing members, some noted that customer service experiences can vary, with occasional reports of management miscommunication. We personally didn’t experience this, but given the frequency of such reports, it is worth noting.
We also noticed that in the late afternoon (from 5 pm to 7 pm), the gym was a bit overcrowded. However, during the rest of the day, wait times for equipment were minimal.
Amenities
- Two Indoor Pools (Universal & Women’s Only)
- Women’s-Only Area (with private gym, studio, and pool)
- Spa-like facilities (Saunas, Steam Rooms, Hot Tubs)
- Cafe and Lounge
- Free Wifi
- Multiple Boutique Studios (Yoga, Cycle, HIIT, Pilates, etc.)
Membership Programs
As of January 2026, Movati Athletic in Ottawa continues to use a bi-weekly billing cycle. Prices generally fall into two main tiers: Classic (single-club access) and Select (all-club access with premium perks).
Here is a breakdown of the current estimated costs for the Ottawa locations (Kanata, Barrhaven, Nepean, Orleans, and Train Yards):
1. Membership Tiers
| Membership Tier | Bi-Weekly Cost (est.) | Approx. Monthly Cost | Key Features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic | $42.00 – $46.00 | ~$91 – $100 | Access to 1 home club, all group classes, pools, and women’s-only area. |
| Select | $55.00 – $59.00 | ~$119 – $128 | Access to all Movati locations, towel service, guest passes, and vacation “freezes.” |
Note: Prices are subject to HST (13%) and may vary slightly based on specific seasonal promotions.
2. Initial Fees & Hidden Costs
When signing up, you should expect the following one-time or recurring fees:
- Enrollment Fee: Usually $9.95 to $25.00, though this is frequently waived during “No Enrollment” promotions.
- Facility Enhancement Fee: Typically $29.95. This is often charged once upon joining and sometimes annually to maintain equipment and amenities.
- Commitment: Most standard rates require a 1-year contract. Month-to-month options are sometimes available but usually carry a significantly higher bi-weekly rate.
3. Specialized Services (Extra Cost)
While group fitness classes (Yoga, Cycle, HIIT) are included, certain boutique services cost extra:
- Pilates Reformer: Usually sold in packages (e.g., ~$30 per session in a bundle) or as a monthly add-on.
- Personal Training: Rates typically start around $85–$115 per hour, depending on the trainer’s level and the package size.
- Small Group Training: Specialized performance coaching (like HYROX prep) may have separate fees.
Pros

Description
Many people prefer locally-owned and operated gyms over big-name chain gyms because big health clubs can be overcrowded and offer cookie-cutter services. On the other hand, a small locally owned gym offers a great culture, honest pricing, and is run by local people for local people. If this interests you, Elgin Fitness is the best choice.
Elgin Fitness is a well-equipped facility, despite being smaller than some other fitness clubs on the list. It features a complete cardio theatre with ellipticals, treadmills, bikes, rowing machines, and steppers. The free weights section includes a Smith machine, dual adjustable pulley, leg press, squat rack, and more.
What we liked most about this gym was the friendly and welcoming environment where most members know each other. The management is very supportive, fostering a strong community feel. We attended one of their specialized classes and found it both challenging and motivating.
Amenities
- A modern, clean gym with a variety of selectorized machines
- A well-equipped cardio theatre (treadmills, bikes, steppers, and Concept2 rowers)
- A dedicated stretching room
- Personal training programs available
- Private showers and changing rooms
Membership Programs
There are three main monthly membership options.[1][6][9]
- Single Membership: ~$55/month (+HST)
- Couples Membership: ~$99/month (+HST)
- Student Membership: ~$49/month (+HST)
There are no free trials, but you can try out the facility by purchasing a Guest Pass for $15 (available during staffed hours only). A one-time Key FOB fee (approx. $10) applies to new memberships.
Pros
- Independently owned since 2003 with friendly staff
- Respectful member community
- Clean changing rooms and sufficient lockers
- No lock-in long-term contracts (month-to-month options available)
- Extended weekend hours compared to past schedules
Cons
- It does not have swimming pools, hot saunas, or massage facilities. If you are looking for a luxury spa experience, this gym is focused purely on fitness.
- Guest passes and new sign-ups are only available during specific staffed hours, not 24/7.

Choosing the “best gym” is really about choosing the best fit for your routine. If you need flexibility, a 24/7 gym can remove excuses. If motivation is the issue, group-based options like CrossFit, boutique classes, or Pilates can make consistency easier. And if recovery matters as much as training, premium clubs with wellness amenities may be worth the cost.
Use this list to shortlist 2–3 options, then decide based on:
- Commute time (the gym closest to your real life usually wins)
- Your goal (strength, weight loss, performance, mobility, stress relief)
- Your comfort level (beginner-friendly vs. intense training culture)
- Total cost (membership + fees + paid add-ons like Pilates or coaching)
If pain or recurring injuries are holding you back, getting a clear diagnosis and plan can help you train safely and build momentum again.
How to Return to the Gym Safely After Pain or Injury
Getting back to the gym after pain or an injury feels great — until the same pain shows up again. That second flare-up is common, and it usually has nothing to do with willpower. It happens when the body is asked to do too much, too soon. Here is how to come back in a way that sticks.
Why pain can come back when you return too fast
After time off, your strength, control, and tissue tolerance drop. The movements may feel the same in your head, but your body is not where it was. When you jump straight back to old weights or old mileage, the load can outpace what the tissue is ready for. That gap is where flare-ups start. Coming back a little lighter is not a step back — it is how you avoid losing more time later. A physiotherapy assessment can help set a starting point that matches where your body is now. Learn more: Physiotherapy Ottawa.
Why modifying beats stopping completely
When pain shows up, many people stop training altogether. That can backfire. Full rest can let strength and confidence slip even more, which makes the comeback harder. In many cases, the better path is to keep moving with changes, not to quit. The goal is to stay active while the irritated area settles. Our sports physiotherapy team can help you find which movements to keep and which to adjust. Learn more: Sports Physiotherapy.
Movements that may need a temporary change
A few common gym movements tend to bother certain areas while they recover. You usually do not need to drop them for good — you may just need to lighten them or swap them for a similar movement while things calm down:
- Heavy squats and deadlifts can stir up low back pain. Learn more: Back Pain Physiotherapy.
- Overhead press and bench press can bother an irritated shoulder. Learn more: Shoulder Physiotherapy.
- Deep lunges and running can load a sensitive knee.
When to reduce load, range, or how often you train
You do not have to change everything at once. Try adjusting one thing at a time:
- Load: lower the weight so the movement feels smooth and controlled.
- Range: shorten the range of motion (for example, a box squat instead of a deep squat) until full range feels okay.
- Frequency: train the area less often, and give it more recovery days.
If a lighter, shorter, or less frequent version still hurts, that is a sign to get it looked at rather than push through.
When to book an assessment instead of pushing through
Mild soreness that fades in a day or two is usually fine. Book an assessment when pain keeps returning, gets worse, wakes you at night, spreads down an arm or leg, or comes with swelling, weakness, or instability. A chiropractor or physiotherapist can assess what is going on, explain what may be irritated, and help you build a safer plan back to full training. Not sure which to see first? Our Chiropractor Ottawa and physiotherapy teams work together and can point you to the right starting point.

There’s no dress code. Wear comfortable athletic clothing you can move in, plus supportive shoes for your workout style. Bring water, and a small towel if your gym or class recommends it.
Regular exercise improves strength, energy, and cardiovascular health. It also helps manage stress, supports better sleep, and can improve mood through positive changes in brain chemistry.
Most memberships include access to the gym floor and equipment. Some gyms include group classes, while others charge extra. Premium clubs may include amenities like pools or saunas, and boutique studios often use class packs or monthly memberships instead of open-gym access.
Choose the option you can realistically attend 3–4 times per week based on location and schedule. Then match the gym to your main goal—strength, weight loss, performance, mobility, or stress relief—and make sure the environment feels comfortable enough that you’ll stay consistent.
It can be worth it if you’re new, returning after time off, or unsure how to progress safely. Even a few sessions can improve technique and help you build a simple plan you can follow consistently.
Often yes, especially for popular formats like Pilates, hot yoga, and small-group training. Many studios and premium clubs also have cancellation rules and limited spots, so booking ahead prevents missed sessions.
It’s a strong option for building core strength, control, and mobility with lower impact than many gym workouts. If you have pain or limitations, start with beginner-level sessions and adjust early if symptoms flare instead of pushing through sharp pain.
