In our clinics, about 60 % of low‑back complaints are mechanical or SI‑joint–related, 30 % involve disc injuries and 10 % are due to trauma or degeneration. Most patients are in their 20s–40s, work at desks or study for long periods, or are older individuals with degenerative changes.

Many cases of low‑back and hip pain stem from poor posture, prolonged sitting, weak core and glute muscles and tight hip flexors and hamstrings. This ‘lower‑cross syndrome’ results in mechanical low‑back pain and sacro‑iliac dysfunction, especially among students and office workers. Learning proper lifting techniques, taking regular movement breaks and strengthening core and glute muscles can prevent these issues.

Common Causes of Low Back Pain & Hip Pain

Low back and hip pain can affect anyone, read more below for a list of common causes and treatments. Once your chiropractor and/ or physiotherapist finds the underlying cause, they will come up with an action plan for treatment.

Arthritis

Osteoarthritis can affect the hip joints and the joints in the lower back. This results from wear and tear, making it most common in people over age 40. Pain and stiffness are common symptoms

Pinched Nerve

The pain that can occur with a pinched nerve can be severe, burning, tingling and shooting. It may result from stress, sports, arthritis, repetitive movements, trauma or tight muscles around hip and back.

Strains and Sprains

A strain describes a muscle that is overstretched or torn while a sprain is a ligament that is overstretched or torn. The most common causes are awkward twisting, trauma, and heavy lifting or sports injuries.

Tight Back or Hip Muscles

If these muscles are tight, it may cause pain, stiffness and reduced range of motion. Prolonged sitting or standing, especially in a slouched position, leads to tight hip flexors and hamstrings and weak glute and back muscles. This imbalance (lower-cross syndrome) causes stiffness, reduced range of motion and pain. Regular stretching, ergonomic adjustments and core/glute strengthening are vital components of our treatment plan.

Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction

This joint connects the pelvis and lower spine. If the joint has too little or too much movement, sharp, stabbing pain might be felt in the hips and lower back at random.

Herniated Disc

A herniated disc in the lumbar spine can cause pressure on the nerves in the area, resulting in burning and radiating pain that can go from the back to the foot. A herniated disc will typically also cause the injured person to be bent forward, feeling ‘stuck’, and unable to move. This may occur as a result of improper lifting, repetitive strain, prolonged driving, awkward twisting, trauma or a fall or being overweight.

Our practitioners select modalities based on the underlying cause: mechanical or postural pain typically improves with chiropractic adjustments, myofascial release and exercise; sacro‑iliac dysfunction responds well to adjustments and core strengthening; degenerative pain often benefits from TECAR therapy and soft‑tissue release; and discogenic pain may require decompression and careful physiotherapy. We tailor treatment plans accordingly.
