What is Brazilian Jiu-jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a form of martial arts based on grappling and ground fighting. The techniques used in this type of martial arts control the resisting opponent and force them to submit. The practitioners of jiu-jitsu strike and apply various joint locks or strangles to make their opponents surrender. The main focus in BJJ is on real-world defence situations

Several schools and gyms train in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Ottawa, but the one that has made it to our list is De La Costa Academy. Many reviewers appreciate their classes for the positive environment and the expertise of the instructors.

What do we like about this class?

They do both No-Gi and Gi forms of BJJ. Gi is the traditional Jiu-Jitsu uniform. While performing Gi Jiu-Jitsu, the participants wear that traditional uniform. It allows them to grab the clothing of their opponent to control or submit them. In No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu, the participants don’t wear traditional uniforms.

Another thing we liked about their BJJ class is the fact that they do No-Gi and Gi classes as blocks rather than on separate weekdays. So they do 6-8 weeks of Gi followed by 6-8 weeks of No-Gi.

Head instructor and co-founder Joe Neurauter is a black belt and is known for his expertise. The gym provides training to everyone, including beginners and combat athletes.

The instructors specifically focus on aggressive goal setting, achievement and real-world self-defence skills. Many trainees reported that they developed confidence, improved skill and focus and had good overall fitness after a few weeks of training.
