A bunion (the medical term for bunions is hallux valgus) is a bump that forms on the joint at the base of your big toe — the joint of your big toe. It forms on the joint when the first metatarsal drifts inward and the big toe angles toward the second toe/toward the other toes, leaving the big toe out of alignment. The bunion can cause pain and shoe irritation, especially around your big toe. Our focus is to calm irritated tissues and optimize gait; treatments don’t “push bone back,” and only surgery can remove a bunion/remove bunions.
Bunions form when your big toe drifts and big toe pushes the second toe; the bump that forms at the joint where your big toe meets your foot is the most common bunion seen in clinic. Good footwear and early care can prevent bunions from worsening and help relieve pain.
