At Kent Chiro-Med Wellness Clinic, you get integrated, one-on-one care in private treatment rooms with extended 30-minute sessions. Our physiotherapy + chiropractic team blends manual therapy, exercise, TECAR therapy, taping, and custom orthotics to reduce bunion pain, improve the joint where your big toe meets your foot, and prevent flare-ups. We work with you to create a personalized treatment plan for non-surgical bunion treatment; in rare cases we may recommend bunion surgery in coordination with a foot & ankle surgeon.

What Is a Bunion?

A bunion (the medical term for bunions is hallux valgus) is a bump that forms on the joint at the base of your big toe — the joint of your big toe. It forms on the joint when the first metatarsal drifts inward and the big toe angles toward the second toe/toward the other toes, leaving the big toe out of alignment. The bunion can cause pain and shoe irritation, especially around your big toe. Our focus is to calm irritated tissues and optimize gait; treatments don’t “push bone back,” and only surgery can remove a bunion/remove bunions.

Bunions form when your big toe drifts and big toe pushes the second toe; the bump that forms at the joint where your big toe meets your foot is the most common bunion seen in clinic. Good footwear and early care can prevent bunions from worsening and help relieve pain.

Symptoms & Common Causes

Symptoms

  • Sore, swollen bump at the base of the big toe/base of your big toe; skin over the bunion may get red when the bunion is irritated
  • Stiffness or limited big-toe bend (especially during push-off); pain and discomfort on the side of the foot or top of the toe
  • Ball of your foot/bottom of the foot callusing; big toe and second toe crowding if the big toe pushes/big toe pushes against its neighbor
  • Shoe pressure can cause pain and swelling and pain, especially in narrow or high heels

Causes

Tight/narrow shoes (deep toe boxes help), hereditary laxity, and mechanics like over-pronation can lead to bunions/cause bunions; many people with bunions develop bunions when the big toe is pushed inward by footwear that increases pressure on the big toe/pressure on your big toe.

How We Diagnose

  • Detailed history & foot/ankle/hip movement exam

  • Palpation of the bunion region and joint glide testing at the 1st MTP

  • Gait assessment and load tolerance testing (walking/jogging as appropriate)

  • Imaging (X-ray/ultrasound) only if needed to rule out other causes or for surgical referral planning

  • We also identify the type of bunion (mild/moderate/severe) to guide care

Comprehensive Bunion Treatment Options in Ottawa

We combine the right tools for your foot, footwear, and activity goals — practical ways to treat bunions without surgery. The best treatment depends on your goals and the type of bunion you have.

  • Manual therapy to the 1st MTP joint, capsule, and surrounding soft tissues

  • Joint mobilizations and soft-tissue techniques (including instrument-assisted when appropriate)

  • Neuromuscular retraining and progressive loading for foot intrinsics and calf

  • Gait retraining and return-to-walk/run programming tailored to your goals

  • Footwear review to take pressure off the bump and protect the bunion/help relieve pain.

A first-in-Ottawa technology that calms pain, reduces muscle guarding, and improves mobility in irritated soft tissues around the bunion; often paired with manual therapy and exercise.

When arch mechanics or overpronation drive your symptoms, custom orthotics and shoe modifications can offload the first ray and reduce bunion pressure so you can walk longer with less pain.

  • Therapeutic taping for activity/sports days

  • Toe spacer strategy (as tolerated) to reduce friction and help alignment comfort

  • Activity pacing and step-count progressions tailored to your day

  • Calf/ankle mobility + big-toe “windlass” drills you can do at home

Surgery isn’t first-line for most people. If conservative care isn’t enough or your bunion limits shoes and daily life, we’ll coordinate with trusted foot & ankle surgeons and co-manage your pre-/post-op rehab.

FAQs

We can’t “move bone back,” but we can reliably reduce pain, improve big-toe mobility, and optimize your gait so you can walk farther, more comfortably.

Only surgery can remove a bunion, but we can manage bunion pain and improve function.

Most bunions don’t need surgery. If conservative care falls short, we may recommend a surgical opinion (bunion surgery) and support your rehab.

Yes for many patients — especially with overpronation or forefoot overload. Orthotics reduce pressure on the first ray and complement your exercise program.

Footwear with deep toe boxes, bunion pads to protect the bunion, activity pacing, strength/mobility drills, and occasional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can help relieve pain around your big toe without surgery.

As an adjunct, TECAR can calm irritated soft tissues around the joint and improve mobility, helping you progress with exercise and gait work.

Most feel relief in 2–4 weeks with consistent home drills and footwear changes; bigger functional wins build over 6–8+ weeks.
